Team Sochi is headed home, and I wanted to close out this chapter of NPR On The Road with this little girl I spotted on my last day in Sochi. She was in the park near our hotel pretending to be a figure skater.
It was very easy as a reporter to criticize these Olympics. It was too expensive. Too warm. Will leave behind a lot of empty arenas. But as we learned, not even the organizers of the Olympics can ruin the Olympics. Every day we would come back into the media center talking about some amazing thing we saw a human being do on the snow, on the ice or in the air.
We’ll see how Sochi fares after the athletes and reporters go home, but I can guarantee this: In 12 years, we’ll be at some Winter Games (Denver? Dubai?) and some gold medal winner will tell us the story of watching Sochi and being inspired. Maybe this little girl.
